Rev Peter Griffin was born and educated in our Parish and was ordained as our first Permanent Deacon on 18th November 2002.
The title "Deacon" comes from the Greek word "diakonos", which means "servant". In the Catholic Church, the ordained clergy consists of three distinct groups, Bishops, Priests and Deacons. A Deacon is not a substitute for a Priest, he has a very specific role within the Church. His faculties include proclaiming the Gospel as Mass; preaching at Mass and on other occasions; leading Eucharistic Services; administering the Sacraments of Baptism and Marriage; officiating at Funerals; and various other functions as described in canon and liturgical law. A Deacon works in the parish in which he lives and is accountable directly to the Bishop. With the present decline in vocations to the priesthood, the role of the Deacon has become even more important in supporting the parish priest and we are very blessed to have such a dedicated Deacon among us.
